Proxy/sniping on ebay?

So i just put a bid on a halloween costume and someone put in SIX bids after me, their price rising incrementally by like 50 cents or something until they were 50 cents above me. first off, are they using the proxy feature that allows users to protect against sniping (assuming their highest amount is higher than the sniper)? also, i want to lure them into a false sense of security by not doing the proxy feature that raises the price incrementally above them. during the last few minutes of the auction, i want to use that proxy feature to beat them. does that make sense? will it work? okay here, let me explain this again, during the last few minutes, i want to put in that proxy thing and start raising the price by like 50 cents above them. starting that bidding war later would mean i might get the item at a cheaper price ,right? and i would still win because of the proxy feature automatically bidding higher than them each time right?

  1. I think you are a little confused about that feature. The bidder who kept raising the price wanted to see how high you would go by actually bidding .50 at a time. If it was a proxy it would have been one bid that was immediately higher than your highest price. Sniping is when you bid at the last second, literally, so the proxy doesn't have time to work. If the bidder you are against is only putting in .50 increments yes your plan will work but I recommend you put in your highest price and just leave it if you really want the item. If you want to snipe him you must have two screens open, one to watch the auction on (refresh every couple of seconds) and one to hold your bid and enter it at the last couple seconds of the auction. It doesn't always work though - you have to have a really fast connection (ping it if you can). This is all theoretical - I have never actually done it because I never wanted anything that badly. And I would never condone sniping of course because that is not in the spirit of fair play on ebay, right?
