How does a person securely collect credit card payments through a website?

I just wanted to know how this is done because I people do that while operating an online store or through several auction sites. Also, is some of software needed for this purpose? Any answer is grateful.

  1. Brian, the easiest and fastest way to do this is through Paypal. Their fees really aren't that much more than a regular credit card processor AND you don't have to mess with SSL certificates and the like. Until you know for sure what your volume will be, Paypal seems to be the way to go. Costs nothing to set up, once you figure it out it is pretty easy to deal with and they basically own the online processing world. Good luck with your business
  2. You have the easy way of using either Paypal or Google Checkout to accept and process credit card payments But if you want better rates and more control, you need to have the following: - a Merchant account with banks or services such as Card Service International http://www.cardservice.com/ - a payment gateway service such as Authorize.net http://authorize.net/ or TrustCommerce http://www.trustcommerce.com/ - a SSL certificate for encryption such as Thawte http://www.thawte.com or Verisign http://www.verisign.com/ssl/ssl-information-center/ - Shopping cart system such as OScommerce http://www.oscommerce.com/
  3. I do not shop on-line, I don't trust the places like Pay-Pal or similar. The only on-line banking I do, is to check my account.
